Lygos is Awarded National Science Foundation Grant for Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Lygos hosted two interns this summer in its Berkeley office.
Sid Gampa is a senior undergraduate studying Bioengineering at UC Berkeley. He became interested in metabolic engineering when he learned that it was a convenient green alternative for biofuel production. In his free time, he likes to read books, play basketball, and go hiking.
Sid interned in the Metabolic Engineering group and “had a great time learning about sustainable bio production and engineering. Lygos is a great place to work with many capable scientists who were willing to teach and help me learn. I also had the opportunity to manage my own project and contribute to the research being done on Bio-Malonic Acid production. I hope to continue exploring how metabolic engineering can be used to create chemicals in a sustainable fashion.”
Helen Park is originally from the East Coast where she is completing her final year in Chemical Engineering at Princeton University. To de-stress during the school year, she plays ultimate frisbee, plans events and food menus for her eating club, Charter, and dabbles in sculpture and painting classes. Though she will always feel strong ties to home, it was nice for her to leave the so-called “Orange Bubble” and escape to the California sunshine. The summer opportunities to explore San Francisco and hike Yosemite might just tempt her to stay for good!
Helen writes, “I have greatly enjoyed my time at Lygos. I feel privileged to have worked alongside experts in the field of biotechnology. Lygos gave me a unique opportunity to learn from all industry sectors, while participating in a small, dynamic environment. I appreciated the space to develop my skills in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology. Moreover, I learned about fermentation and separations chemistry. Most importantly, I understood how all of our efforts connected and influenced each other. As I look forward to my final year of college, these themes of team management, strategic planning, and operations optimization are topics I look forward to developing further. Finally, the openness and friendliness of everyone is what made the summer most rewarding. Thank you all for the opportunity!”
